EBL harnesses additional waste heat from GETEC PARK in Muttenz

Muttenz, Liestal / Pratteln, April 2, 2026 – CO₂-neutral waste heat flows from the GETEC PARK.SWISS industrial park into the district heating network of EBL (Genossenschaft Elektra Baselland). The new connecting pipeline from the industrial park to EBL’s energy centre increases the capacity of the Pratteln district heating network and thus the sustainable energy supply for the growing community.

The new transmission line has been successfully commissioned. It connects the industrial park in Schweizerhalle with EBL’s energy centre in the north of Pratteln. In the future, the line will transport at least 26.5 GWh of climate-neutral waste heat from industrial production annually, which corresponds to the heating needs of around 2,200 households and saves approximately 7,022 tons of CO₂ emissions each year.

Increased capacity in the Pratteln district heating network

The Pratteln district heating network emerged from five thermal networks that EBL had built as individual plants in the 1990s. In the north of Pratteln, EBL now operates a large energy plant. Here, water circulating in a loop is heated—primarily in a CO₂-neutral manner. Until now, the energy plant has primarily used waste heat from the neighbouring Rhein wastewater treatment plant, as well as wood from local forests and recycled wood, as renewable energy sources. The continuously circulating water loop supplies heat to connected residential, office, commercial, and public buildings. As more households and businesses have connected to district heating in recent years, the energy plant has reached its capacity limit. With the connection to the GETEC PARK.SWISS industrial park, the additional demand for district heating can be met within the network.

Collaboration with GETEC

GETEC operates the industrial park in Muttenz, where industrial processes generate waste heat. This locally sourced, CO₂-neutral energy will in the future be collected on-site and transported to EBL’s energy centre. An existing pressure pipeline tunnel leading from GETEC PARK.SWISS to the Rhein wastewater treatment plant in Pratteln will be used for the necessary transport lines.

“With the commissioning of the transport line, we are taking another step toward a climate-neutral heat supply by 2035. The partnership with GETEC is a forward-looking example of regional energy efficiency for us,” says Roger Scheidegger, Head of the Heat Division and member of EBL’s Executive Board. Urs Zimmerli, CEO of GETEC Switzerland, also highlights the strong collaboration: “We are pleased to be making an active contribution, together with EBL, to the decarbonisation of the regional energy supply. Using industrial waste heat as a district heating source is not only efficient but also consistently sustainable.”

Further reducing emissions

With the new system, the share of CO₂-neutral sources in the Pratteln district heating network rises to over 95 per cent. EBL will thus supply its customers even more sustainably in the future. By 2035, EBL aims to supply its service area with 100 per cent climate-neutral heat.

In addition, EBL is continuously working to expand the Ergolztal 3ET renewable energy corridor, which is intended to eventually deliver district heating from Pratteln to Ormalingen—a goal toward which EBL took another step this year in collaboration with the company GETEC.
