Securing a sustainable future for cities and communities

The energy transition is essential for city councils, local governments and municipalities, to ensure public buildings and community infrastructure have a secure and sustainable energy supply. GETEC has the experience and expertise to meet the complex energy needs of municipalities, with customised solutions that reduce costs, adhere to national climate regulations and provide a reliable supply of heat and power from renewable sources. These solutions include available subsidies, the renovation requirements of existing buildings and the expectations of citizens for environmentally friendly and cost-effective energy.

Reliable energy for the municipalities of tomorrow

Energy efficiency, grid stability and waste heat management – GETEC enables municipalities to meet complex and changing energy demands while upgrading infrastructure and transitioning to green heating and geothermics. Intelligent energy management systems and renewable sources help municipalities to reduce consumption, improve district heating and achieve their decarbonisation goals. With Managed Energy Infrastructure, GETEC ensures the long-term management of energy projects for more predictable energy costs, integration of local utilities and minimised upfront investments.

Comprehensive energy management

  • Secure energy supply
  • Reduced costs and waste
  • Community and citizen engagement
  • Avoid upfront investments

Recovered waste heat warms households

Together with TIM Enterprise, the TIM business unit that supports large companies and public administration in their digital transformation journey, GETEC has established a renewable energy project for the municipality of Rozzano in northern Italy. This involves repurposing the heat produced by a data centre to provide heating and hot water for local households in the ALER district.

3500 tonnes
Reduction of CO₂ per year
5000
Households using recovered waste heat
Recovering waste heat from data centres marks a significant step towards the energy transition in cities, with an innovative solution that reduces CO₂ emissions and promotes a more efficient energy model.

FAQ

How is Managed Energy Infrastructure beneficial for municipalities?

A comprehensive energy and infrastructure solution from a single service provider enables municipalities to benefit from cost savings, improved energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, enhanced energy independence, access to new technologies and simplified energy management systems. Municipalities can then focus on community improvements and meeting their sustainability goals, without the burden of upfront investment or ownership.

Which energy solutions are particularly suitable for municipalities?

Energy solutions for municipalities need to meet the specific requirements of the community and its citizens, while also taking into account national climate standards and limited budgets for modernisation. The ideal solution enhances energy independence, reduces emissions and provides a reliable and cost-effective energy supply. This includes a balance of renewable sources, energy storage systems and smart grid technologies to manage energy flow and further the transition to green energy.

How does energy contracting work for cities and municipalities?

Energy contracting works through a partnership with an established energy service provider, such as GETEC. One option is for initial investments to be financed by the energy savings achieved, with the municipality paying the energy provider based on actual energy savings, effectively funding the project from its own cost reductions. Other contract models include energy performance contracting (the energy provider takes on the performance risk), power purchase agreements (often for large renewable energy projects) and Managed Energy Infrastructure (the provider takes on the entire energy management on a contract basis). Municipalities avoid upfront capital costs and gain access to complex energy upgrades.

What funding opportunities are available to municipalities?

Municipalities can access funding through local taxes, state and national grants, debt bonds, private organisations, and public-private partnerships. Key areas for grants often include infrastructure, economic development, public safety, environmental projects, community engagement, modernisation and social services.

How can entire neighbourhoods ensure a sustainable energy supply?

By implementing measures for energy efficiency, using renewable energy sources and intelligently balancing supply and demand. Every municipality benefits from taking a holistic approach to energy, with numerous actions taken to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. This includes fostering engagement from citizens, improving building insulation, integrating solar panels, promoting electric vehicles and encouraging sustainable lifestyles to reduce overall energy use.
