Manufacturing tyres with energy from biomass at Goodyear

Goodyear Germany GmbH is a subsidiary of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, one of the world’s largest tyre companies and a leader in the automotive industry. The Hanau site produces tyres for a wide range of car brands and motorsport racing teams.

When the company decided to switch to a highly efficient steam supply that meets its sustainability requirements, GETEC had the ideal energy solution. The resulting heating plant was an outstanding cooperation between GETEC, Goodyear and Stadtwerke Hanau, the local energy service provider.

Sustainable heat from climate-neutral biomass

Tyre production is an energy-intensive process, and Goodyear wants to make their production more sustainable as part of its goal to use 100% renewable energy in all global manufacturing facilities by 2040. The biomass heating plant in Hanau provides up to 95% of the heat required for production, with the fuel for the plant including locally sourced residual wood and forest waste. The plant has a capacity of 16 MWh and can deliver up to 24 tons of process steam per hour. For the development of the heating plant, GETEC managed the entire project, including approvals, financing, installation and much more.

A 95% reduction of CO₂

By switching to steam produced from biomass, the Goodyear plant’s CO₂ emissions are expected to be reduced by up to 95% per year. Additionally, around 15% of the renewable heat generated goes to Stadtwerke Hanau to supply the city with heat. The project was supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. It underlines the commitment of GETEC and Goodyear to the transition towards sustainable energy.

The combination with district heating supply illustrates the potential of close collaboration between industry and local energy suppliers to achieve common climate targets.
